14 February 2010

Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Minister of State for Federal National Council Affairs and Chairman of the National Committee to Combat Human Trafficking (NCCHT) HE Dr. Anwar Mohammed Gargash said that the tireless efforts made by the UAE in combating human trafficking has strengthened its position on the world map of the battle against this transnational crime.

Gargash was making the opening remarks while chairing the NCCHT meeting held at the headquarters of the Ministry of State for FNC Affairs.

The Committee reviewed a number of topics including the report on the participation of the UAE delegation in the Second Meeting of the Working Group on Trafficking in Persons held in Vienna from 27 to 29 January.

The major themes that were discussed at the Vienna meeting also came up for review at the meeting. This included the basic concepts contained in the Protocol to Prevent, Suppress and Punish Trafficking in human beings and good practices and tools recommended in order to reduce the demand for exploitative services.

The committee also discussed the media's handling of the issues of trafficking in human beings and the ways to deal with the victims. The need for a balance between access to information and knowledge, which is at the heart of the media work and privacy, was emphasised.

The Committee decided to work to develop frameworks for gathering news in such a way that protects the privacy of victims of human trafficking without hindering the freedom of the press.

Gargash said that respect for privacy of all members of the community in general and victims of human trafficking in particular is one of the important factors to be taken care of in the process of rehabilitation of the victims and their reintegration into the fabric of society.
