Mohammed meets with Zayed Prize jury and board

01 March 2010

UAE Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum received Dr. Klaus Topfer, Chairman of the jury overseeing the Zayed International Prize for the Environment, at Al Marmoum today.

Along with the chairman, Sheikh Mohammed also met with members of the prize's board, with the attendance of its chairman and Minister of Environment and Water, Dr. Rashid Ahmed bin Fahad.

Dr. Topfer briefed Sheikh Mohammed on the jury's decisions concerning nominations of scientists and researchers from the UAE, Arab and foreign countries in all categories of the prize. Awards will be handed out to leaders in the fields of global environmental leadership, scientific and technological achievement and environmental action affecting positive changes in society.

The prize's fifth edition will be held under the theme, 'The Green Environment', in line with Sheikh Mohammed's call for the adoption of green building standards.

After approving measures taken by the environmental prize's board, Sheikh Mohammed directed that the geographical scope of the prize be broadened to reflect the role and history of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan, after whom the prize is named.

The environment minister said that the prize would organise a conference on eco-tourism from April 17-18, on the sidelines of the fifth award-giving ceremony.
