The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the UAE's regulator for the nuclear sector, is to take over licensing radiation use in the UAE. In accordance with the Federal Law No 6 of 2009, Regarding the Peace

WAM Abu Dhabi, Apr 25th, 2010 (WAM) -- The Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), the UAE's regulator for the nuclear sector, is to take over licensing radiation use in the UAE.

In accordance with the Federal Law No 6 of 2009, Regarding the Peaceful Uses of Nuclear Energy, all users of radioactive materials and radiation sources for medical, industrial, security or educational purposes will soon need a FANR licence to use these or any other regulated material in the country.

The FANR licence allows users to import or export, transport, store or dispose of any regulated material in the UAE.

This licence replaces any licence that was previously issued under the former Federal Law No 1 of 2002, Regarding the Regulation and Control of the Use of Radiation Sources and Protection against their Hazards. Any person or local or federal entity that uses ionising radiation without a FANR licence will be in breach of the law and subjected to penalties.

Users of radioactive materials and radiation sources in the UAE are required to submit licence applications to FANR by 30 June 2010. FANR will review and then issue licences by September 2010 only if the licence application meets FANR requirements, said a statement from FANR.
